Attractions in Poole

Brownsea Island, Poole Museum, Compton Acres and the gardens, parks and historic quarters that fill a Poole weekend.

Poole's attractions are spread between the water, the gardens and the old streets behind the Quay, and most of them are within a few miles of each other.

On the water

Brownsea Island is the headline: 500 acres of woodland, heath and lagoon in the middle of the harbour, with red squirrels, peacocks and a place in Scouting history. Boats run from Poole Quay and from Sandbanks.

Gardens and parks

Compton Acres at Canford Cliffs is a sequence of themed gardens, Italian and Japanese among them, laid out above the harbour. Poole Park is the Victorian one, built around a saltwater lake, with a miniature railway. Upton Country Park adds parkland, a Georgian house and a stretch of harbour shoreline.

History and museums

Poole Museum on the Quay tells the town's maritime story and holds the Iron Age Poole Logboat. The Old Town around it is an attraction in itself, with the Guildhall, Scaplen's Court and the Cockle Trail linking them.

Common questions

Attractions in Poole questions

What is Poole's most famous attraction?

Brownsea Island, the National Trust island in the middle of Poole Harbour. It is known for its red squirrels, its peacocks and its lagoon birdlife, and as the site of Baden-Powell's 1907 experimental camp, which is treated as the beginning of the Scout movement.

Is Poole Museum free?

Poole Museum on the Quay has historically been free to enter. It covers the town's maritime history and holds the Poole Logboat, an Iron Age vessel recovered from the harbour. Check current opening times before travelling.

What attractions in Poole are good for children?

Poole Park has a boating lake, a miniature railway and play areas. Brownsea Island works as an outdoor adventure, Hamworthy Park has a paddling area and beach, and the Quay itself holds a child's attention longer than most museums do.

Do you need to book Brownsea Island?

Boats leave from Poole Quay and Sandbanks through the main season. Booking the boat ahead is sensible in summer and at half term, and National Trust members should check what the landing fee covers.

Where to stay in Poole

Sandbanks hotels, harbourside flats a street back from the Quay and the quieter beds out at Hamworthy and Broadstone, with the areas each one suits.
