Autumn is the open secret of this coast. The sea is at its warmest, the light is at its best, and the people have gone.
The water
Sea temperature lags air temperature by around two months, so September often delivers the warmest swimming of the year. Lifeguard cover winds down as the season closes, so check what is patrolled. See beach safety.
Walking
The harbour shoreline, the heath and the coast path at Studland are at their best now: clear air, long shadows and empty paths. See walking and trails.
Wildlife
The first of the overwintering waders arrive on the harbour mudflats, and ospreys pass through on migration. See wildlife.
Practicalities
Accommodation prices fall and tables are easier to get. Some boat services and beach cafes reduce hours from October.
