Things to Do

Eight Free Things to Do in Poole

Poole has an unusually high proportion of genuinely free things worth doing, mostly because the best of it is outdoors or publicly owned.

1. Poole Museum

Free, on the Quay, several floors, and it holds the Poole Logboat: an oak vessel hollowed out around 2,300 years ago and pulled from the harbour mud. Also the best wet-weather option in town.

2. The Cockle Trail

A marked, self-guided walking route through the Old Town, linking the Quay, the Guildhall and Scaplen’s Court. Ninety minutes, flat, free, and the quickest way to read 800 years off the buildings.

3. Poole Park

A Victorian park built around a saltwater lake fed from the harbour. Free to walk into, with flat paths, open grass and play areas. See Poole Park.

4. The lifting bridge

It opens on a schedule to let masts through. It costs nothing, it takes five minutes, and it reliably stops children mid-sentence. See Poole Quay.

5. Every beach

All of them, free to walk onto. Only the parking costs. See beaches.

6. Upton Country Park

Parkland, formal gardens and a stretch of harbour shoreline. Free entry; parking charged. In winter it is one of the better accessible birdwatching spots on the harbour. See Upton Country Park.

7. Hamworthy Park

Shallow harbour water, grass, a playground and a paddling area. Free, and the best family beach in Poole for small children.

8. The harbour shoreline

From Baiter round to Hamworthy is flat the whole way, with water beside you and two bridges to cross. See walking and trails.

Travelling on a budget? January and February are the cheapest months outright, and September gives you the warmest sea of the year at well under August prices.

Where to Stay

Make it a stay, not just a day out

If this has you planning a trip, stay close enough to walk back for a jumper. The where to stay section has the Sandbanks hotels, the quieter beds out at Hamworthy and Broadstone, and the self-catering flats around the Quay, with the areas each one suits. For a longer stay or a family, a kitchen usually beats a room: self-catering compares them. Travelling with a dog? See dog-friendly stays.
