Days Out Without the Car

A mainline station, buses to the beaches, boats to the island and a chain ferry into the hills: Poole works car-free.

Poole is one of the easiest places on the south coast to visit without a car, and in summer it is often faster.

Arriving

Direct trains from London Waterloo take around two hours. Poole station sits in the middle of town, a ten-minute walk from the Quay and the Old Town.

A day on the water

Walk to the Quay and take a boat to Brownsea Island. Twenty minutes each way, red squirrels and a lagoon full of birds at the other end.

A day at the beach

Bus from the town centre out to Canford Cliffs, Branksome or Sandbanks. No circling for a parking space.

A day in the hills

Bus to Sandbanks, walk onto the chain ferry as a foot passenger, and you are in Studland four minutes later, with the coast path to Old Harry Rocks ahead of you.

A day in the park

Poole Park is walkable from the station, with Parkstone station at the far end.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Poole without a car?

Easily. Trains from London Waterloo arrive in the centre, the Quay and Old Town are a ten-minute walk from the station, buses run to the beaches, boats leave the Quay for Brownsea Island, and the chain ferry takes foot passengers into Purbeck.

Is there a bus from Poole station to the beach?

Buses run from the town centre out along the peninsula to Canford Cliffs, Branksome and Sandbanks. On a hot day this beats driving, because the beach car parks fill by mid-morning.

Can you reach the Jurassic Coast from Poole without a car?

Yes. Take the chain ferry as a foot passenger from Sandbanks to Studland and walk the coast path to Old Harry Rocks, which is the eastern end of the World Heritage Site. Boat trips from the Quay reach it too.
