January in Poole

January is Poole stripped back to what it actually is, and there is a lot to be said for it.

The birds

This is the harbour’s real season. Poole Harbour is a RAMSAR wetland and the mudflats hold waders and wildfowl in tens of thousands. Upton Country Park and Holes Bay are the accessible places to watch from. Free. See wildlife.

The water

Cold-water swimming has a committed following here, and groups swim right through winter. If you join them: go with others, acclimatise slowly, get warm quickly afterwards, and know the tide. There are no lifeguards in January. See beach safety.

The walking

Empty beaches, hard winter light and the harbour shoreline from Baiter to Hamworthy, flat the whole way. See winter walks.

Indoors

Poole Museum is free. Lighthouse programmes through the winter. The Old Town pubs are what January is for.

The prices

The lowest of the year, by a distance. See Poole in winter.

Where to Stay

Make it a stay, not just a day out

If this has you planning a trip, stay close enough to walk back for a jumper. The where to stay section has the Sandbanks hotels, the quieter beds out at Hamworthy and Broadstone, and the self-catering flats around the Quay, with the areas each one suits. For a longer stay or a family, a kitchen usually beats a room: self-catering compares them. Travelling with a dog? See dog-friendly stays.
