The Christmas Maritime Light Trail

Poole’s Christmas centrepiece works because of where it is: a lit trail along a working quay, with the whole thing doubled in black harbour water.

What it is

A seasonal illuminated trail along Poole Quay and the harbourside. Dates, timings and booking change year to year, so check current listings rather than assuming last year’s arrangements.

Getting there

Town centre and harbourside car parks are a short walk away and busier than usual on trail nights. Poole station is ten minutes on foot.

Make an evening of it

Eat first. The Old Town pubs and the Quay restaurants are a few steps from the trail, and December is the month they come into their own.

And a day around it

Poole Museum is free and warm. Festive markets run through the town. And the harbour mudflats are full of overwintering birds by December, which is a very different kind of December day out. See wildlife.

Where to Stay

Make it a stay, not just a day out

If this has you planning a trip, stay close enough to walk back for a jumper. The where to stay section has the Sandbanks hotels, the quieter beds out at Hamworthy and Broadstone, and the self-catering flats around the Quay, with the areas each one suits. For a longer stay or a family, a kitchen usually beats a room: self-catering compares them. Travelling with a dog? See dog-friendly stays.
