Leave Only Footprints

A protected harbour, rare heath and ground-nesting birds: the small things that keep Poole worth visiting.

Poole Harbour is a RAMSAR wetland, the heath around it is rarer than rainforest, and a great many people visit. The arithmetic only works if visitors are careful.

On the beach

Take everything home, including fishing line and anything plastic. What is left on the sand ends up in a harbour that feeds tens of thousands of birds.

On the heath

Never light a fire or use a disposable barbecue. Heath burns hard and fast, and what is lost takes decades to return. Keep to paths, particularly between spring and late summer when birds are nesting on the ground.

Around the water

Birds roosting on the mudflats at high tide have nowhere else to go. Give them room, and keep paddleboards and kayaks clear of roosts. Do not anchor on seagrass.

With a dog

Follow the seasonal signs: they change through the year for a reason. See dog-friendly stays.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does litter matter so much on Poole beaches?

Beyond the obvious, litter on a beach beside an internationally protected harbour ends up in the water, where it is eaten by birds and fish. Plastic and discarded fishing line are particular problems.

Why can't you light fires on Dorset heathland?

Lowland heath is one of Europe's rarest habitats and it burns fiercely. A single fire can destroy decades of habitat and kill ground-nesting birds and reptiles outright. Fires and disposable barbecues are prohibited on heathland year-round.

Why are there dog restrictions around Poole Harbour?

Much of the harbour shore and the heath supports ground-nesting birds in spring and summer and overwintering waders in winter, both easily disturbed. Seasonal restrictions exist to stop that disturbance.
