Beyond the Beach

Rare lowland heath, harbour islands, reedbeds and the hills behind: the Poole that has nothing to do with sand.

Poole's beaches get the attention, but the land around the harbour is the more unusual thing.

The heath

Lowland heath is rarer than tropical rainforest, and Dorset holds a substantial share of what is left. The heath at Arne, across the water, carries species that live almost nowhere else in Britain. It burns easily and much of its wildlife nests on the ground, so keep to paths and never light a fire.

The islands

Brownsea Island is the one you can land on: red squirrels, peacocks and a lagoon full of birds. The smaller harbour islands are private or managed for wildlife.

The parks

Upton Country Park and Poole Park give you harbour shoreline and green space without leaving the town.

The hills

Four minutes on the chain ferry puts you in the Isle of Purbeck: Studland, Corfe Castle and the chalk ridge. See Dorset and countryside.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do in Poole apart from the beach?

A great deal. Brownsea Island and the harbour, the rare lowland heath at Arne, Upton Country Park and Poole Park, the Old Town and its museum, and the Purbeck hills a four-minute ferry ride away.

What is lowland heath and why does it matter?

Lowland heath is a rare habitat, much of it lost to development and farming, and Dorset holds a significant share of what remains in Europe. It supports species that live almost nowhere else in Britain, and it is fragile: it burns easily and much of its wildlife nests on the ground.

Where can you see wildlife around Poole Harbour?

Brownsea Island for red squirrels and lagoon birds, the Arne shore and Upton Country Park for harbour birdlife, and the heath for its specialist species.
